FAQ for Interested Participants for Summer 2011

Here’s a list of FAQ for those interested in applying to Project Genesis this summer. For a general list of FAQs, check the FAQ page.

1. Why should we go on an internship through Project Genesis?

International work experience – Internships span a variety of professional positions including working in awareness campaigns, working with affected HIV/AIDS peoples, and administrative jobs in NGOs advocating the disease.

Cost – The administrative cost for participation in the Global Internship Program is $530, of which $150 is a refundable deposit. Moreover, the majority of Project Genesis internships offer free accommodation, food, workspace and Internet access.

Flexibility – Participants have a choice of internships offered in over 100 countries. Internships can last from 2 to 18 months and can start any time of the year; however, we are currently recruiting Exchange Participants for summer 2011.

Rewarding work – The overarching vision of Project Genesis is to create a society literate in the causes, effects and trauma AIDS causes and to engage young people in impacting the mindsets and attitudes towards those affected. Project Genesis aims to educate youth on how they can prevent the spread and discrimination placed on the epidemic.

Cultural integration - Students of the receiving local chapter of the AIESEC welcome you at the airport. They will help you get settled by assisting you with accomodation, opening a bank account and other administrative procedures. Cultural activities with the AIESEC chapter are organized, allowing you to be socially integrated into local culture.

A long history of success – For more than 50 years, AIESEC has been offering to its members a program of international work experience in one of more than 100 countries. Our global network realizes more than 5000 internships per year.

Mid-Summer Update

With our summer session well underway, Project Genesis has partnered up with Green Zebra for fundraising and with Link Initiative for training workshops and events. Right now, one of our exchange participants, Jeff, is in Senegal on his internship.

Here is what Jeff had to say:
“I know you’d like to hear about the AIDS issue over here in Senegal, and from what I have learned so far, HIV is quite a taboo issue over here. A part of what AIESEC Senegal is getting me to do right now is learn Wolof, their native language, and a series of their cultural practices (like eating with your hands, greeting ways and such) as a means of establishing indirect rapport with their people.”

“While Dakar itself has tons of support from NGO’s about this issue, the rest of Senegal is not as fortunate and doesn’t receive much information. In fact, the issue is tainted by traditional rumors (such as “wear a talisman blessed by a shaman” and you will be immune to AIDS when you have sex) mainly passed down from helpless parents who don’t know better. Hence, my main field of work is not in Dakar, but around Senegal. As of what ive been told, the ASK project is responsible for traveling around the country and educating schools (not just high schools) on the issue. While I don’t believe it is possible, you have no idea how motivated ASK members are for eradicating the virus entirely. “
